Originally opened in 1965, owner and developer Stanley Whitman envisioned a shopping destination where local and international shoppers can peruse sweeping boutiques with balmy tropical nature in the background. Today, Bal Harbour Shops is considered one of the “first” open-air shopping centers in the country and one of the most iconic retail ventures outside of New York Madison Avenue and Beverly Hill Rodeo Drive.
Spanning 450,000 square feet, guests can experience an al fresco shopping adventure, with upcoming plans for a 350,000-square-foot expansion with additional 70 boutiques slated to open. Carpaccio, Hillstone at Bal Harbour, Le Zoo, Makoto, Santa Fe Café, Vasalissa Chocolatier, Café en 3 at Neiman Marcus, and Bianco Gelato are some of the glamorous and delicious restaurants that lend vibrancy and creativity to this already glamorous mecca. Arts & Culture
Contemporary art is engrained into Bal Harbour with various programs situated throughout the village. Acting as an archetype for culture, residents can explore Unscripted, a public art program that facilitates art chats with internationally renowned guests and commissions a permanent collection at the Art Museum Miami.Residents are also offered the option to participate in the “Museum Access” program which gives complimentary access to Museum of Contemporary Art, Pérez Art Museum Miami, Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science and The Bass Museum of Art, amongst others.
Additionally, Bal Harbour beachwalk, a public walking, running and cycling path, features three annual exhibitions organized by Unscripted in partnership with cultural institutions from around the country. Known as Beach Path Art Exhibit, 50 works of contemporary art are presented in a walkable circle.
